Lilly Ledbetter
Lilly Ledbetter is the activist working on obliterating the gender wage gap in the United States. In 1998, after learning that she made significantly less than her male coworkers, Ledbetter took her employer to court to demand a fair wage. In 2007 the court ruled against her, citing that she should have filed the suit within six months of the discrimination occurring — even though it took her years to discover the imbalance.
That ruling brought the wage gap and our lack of legislation to protect people from pay inequality into the public eye, and two years later the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act passed. It eases the statute of limitations on filing a pay discrimination claim, ensuring that future women won't be let down by the judiciary like she was.
