5. Sappho
Sappho wasn't just a poet from the island of Lesbos, but a poet who truly celebrated loving women. Although not much is known about her life — including her sexuality (she appears to have been heterosexual) — what few writings of hers that still exist (roughly 650 of 10,000 lines) shows that she was a master of hyperbole and had an unmistakable grasp on the written word that was unheard of for then and even now.
