From gorgeous green Instagram lattes, to endless recipes and rave-reviews from health bloggers, matcha is absolutely everywhere right now. This prized superfood was actually first brought to Japan by monks from China in the 12th century — and the rest is pretty much history.

So—you may ask—what is matcha? Matcha is a type of green tea where the whole tea leaf is ground into powder. Regular steeped green tea just infuses water with the leaves, whereas with matcha (which is dissolved into the water) you're actually ingesting the whole leaf itself. Which apparently is extra, extra beneficial to our bodies and mind.

Matcha is typically consumed as a drink, but it can also be added into just about any recipe. Keep reading to learn more about this magical green powder, and all the ways you can drink, and eat, it.
