Sandra Moleirinho is the creative director of Babajaan, a luxury beach and resortwear line with international flair. The Brazil-born, London-based designer and entrepreneur shares the story behind this stunning clutch, which takes her from the beach to the ball.
How did this gorgeous clutch come into your life? "It was a present from a friend of mine, a fashion stylist, more than ten years ago on my birthday. And since then, I've just loved it. It's incredible, everybody loves it and asks me, 'Where is it from?' And nobody believes it's a Ferragamo, because Ferragamo is quite classic. But I've been wearing it always, always, always. It's a key piece for me."
What do you love about it? "What I love about the style is that it's timeless, which is a little bit connected to what I do [as a designer]. And you can wear it with everything, so it's great. There's a handle, so you can always use it as a small little bag. It's a piece you can turn into an easy day wear, a clutch that no one sees because it's not flashy. It's sophisticated, the color is beautiful but you can also wear it to dinner, or to a ball if you want as well. I even take it to the beach! It's very interesting because the design allows you to play with everything; it goes with everything."
Sounds like it was made for you! "And now that it's old, it's getting even better. It has a kind of natural degraded tones of taupe and beige and black. For example, I was in Milan on Monday, I was working and I was walking down the street. A woman in a store said, 'Where's your clutch from?' Everybody asks about this clutch, it's incredible."
How do you like to wear it? "With a pair of jeans, a T-shirt, and I was cycling in Tuscany, you can wear it very simple like that, and yesterday I was at an event for luxury cars and I wore it. It fits so well with everything. I have other clutches but I always pick that one because it's almost my lucky clutch. It's timeless."
How does this timelessness inspire your designs at Babajaan? "We had designed swimwear pieces in the first collection almost seven years ago, and those styles are still the best sellers. I have clients who email me and say, 'Oh, I have a swimsuit I bought seven years ago that I'm still wearing and I want it in different colors.' For me, this is amazing because swimwear is such a seasonal piece, you naturally want to change every year because of the colors, the mood of the season, but our collection is pretty much based on timelessness. It's based on moments, it's an emotion and what a product connects you to. This is my connection to this clutch, and it's brilliant."
Can you tell us about the moment your friend gave it to you? "I remember it was a long time ago and this friend of mine said, 'I saw this and I thought it was you. I wanted to give you something that you like.' He had no idea how much! Sometimes when we bump into each other, I say it's the best-ever present. And it's evolved over the years; it's the kind of product where the more you wear it, the more you understand that it's perfect.'"
A true testament to timelessness. Do any other memorable moments come to mind? "I love sailing and always try every year to go on a sailing trip. [I remember] so many great moments sailing and taking this clutch with me, because when you to stop the boat and go for dinner on a little island, you always need the small boat to take you to the place. So the clutch, all my friends compliment the bag because it's so practical and so easy, and said, 'I should have one like this!' Women are so amazing."
When you see the bag in your closet, what's the first word or feeling that comes to mind? "Timeless. It's funny, but it makes me think of the integrity of my own designs. I have specific things that I take with me and that I always wear, that represent who I really am and shows who you really are. It's part of my personality, like a wedding ring. Certain small pieces that say, 'Okay, that is Sandra. My jeans, T-shirt, flat sandals and this clutch, they say, 'It's Sandra.'"
