9 Tasty Treats For A Vegan BBQ

You don't have to miss out just because you don't eat meat.

9 Tasty Treats For A Vegan BBQ

Being a vegan, one of the first questions I always get asked is, “Don’t you ever miss meat?” My honest answer is: yes. I miss the taste and smell of meat. However when I begin to think about what “meat” actually is, I do not miss it in the slightest and do not feel inclined to put it anywhere near my mouth. In essence “meat” is another word for “flesh,” but of course you’re not going to make any money out of selling flesh to people.

So to get my meaty fix I indulge in meat substitutes which can arguably be seen as a healthier option as they are comprised mostly from veggies. With barbecue season in full force, I wanted to show you how easy it is to have a vegan barbecue at home, or give you some ideas of what to cook if you’re throwing a barbecue and have some vegan friends coming over.

1. The Burger

Obviously you’re going to want to serve the staple food of any BBQ; the burger. This particular veggie burger is an, “All American” style which looks like it would taste awesome straight off of the grill.

2. The Cheese Slice

Of course you are probably going to want some cheese in your burger, but sadly dairy cheese causes a lot of suffering to cows and their calves. So put an end to the suffering and try these dairy free “cheese” slices by Tofutti. They are available in either “American Cheese” or “Mozzarella” style.

3. The Chick’n Sliders

Not a big fan of “beef” style meats? Not a problem! Why not try these meat-free chicken inspired sliders instead? Serve them up with all the trimmings and see if anyone guesses that they’re meat-free.

4. The Hot Dogs

No BBQ is complete without a hot dog. These Worthington Loma Linda Big Franks are made from a combination of soy protein, onion, and natural smoke flavor and contain 58% less fat than regular beef hot dogs.

5. The Tangy Wings

For a real treat, surprise your guests with these Gardein Mild and Tangy Barbecue Chicken Wings. Pile them high on a plate, make your own dip, and wait for the compliments to come pouring in.

6. The Tasty Tabbouleh Salad

Jamie Oliver

Jamie Oliver is a culinary legend - his dishes are always fun, fresh, and modern - so why not be inspired by one of Jamie’s salads? This big, Middle-Eastern style salad is apparently the perfect accompaniment to grilled meat so it should work wonderfully with the rest of your spread.

7. The Fully Raw Salad Dressings

Fully Raw Kristina is a YouTube phenomenon. She is well known for leading a fully raw, vegan lifestyle and showing others how to do the same. For speed and ease on the day of your barbecue, buy some bags of freshly prepared salad leaves, chop up a few of your favorite veggies, and drizzle with one of these delicious-looking dressings.

8. The Potato Salad

A barbecue is not a barbecue without a potato salad. The Vegan Zombie has got your back in showing you how to create the ultimate vegan potato salad. Plus he’s a really funny guy so you’ll have a great time following his recipe.

9. The Chocolate “Ice Cream”

You’ve got to have a dessert at your barbecue and ice cream is always a winner. I tried the Hunky Punky Chocolate ice cream alternative by Booja-Booja the other day and I was absolutely blown away by the creaminess and indulgently rich chocolate flavoring. I even preferred it to dairy ice cream as it wasn’t ridiculously sugary as some dairy ice creams can be. The best part is there are only four natural ingredients used to make this delicious treat: water, agave syrup, cashew nuts, and cocoa powder. That’s it.
