DIY Guava and Honey Hair Mask That's as Sweet as It Sounds(Source: Thinkstock; Art by Tanya Leigh Washington)Treat your tresses to a delectable hair mask that uses the nutrients found in fruit to hydrate and soften strands in just 15 minutes. Mahisha Dellinger, president and CEO of CURLS haircare, shares her recipe for a guava and honey hair mask. Get the details below:

One ripe guava
Two teaspoons of honey
Three drops of lemon essential oil
Half a cup of organic coconut oil

Peel and remove the seeds out of the guava. Blend the fruit and coconut oil in a blender at low speed for 30 seconds. Then add the honey and lemon oil, and blend on medium speed until the honey is mixed well into the fruit. Shampoo hair as normal, ring out excess water and apply hair mask. Leave the guava and honey hair mask on for 15 minutes. Rinse hair with warm water and condition as usual.

Guava is a powerhouse fruit with a number of nutrients including vitamin A, vitamin C, folic acid, potassium, copper and other phytochemicals that are beneficial for healthy hair growth. Honey is an excellent humectant (fancy word for something that keeps things moist), and softens the hair cuticle and prevents hair loss. Dellinger says lemon essential oil is the best essential oil for dry, curly hair because it stimulates the sebaceous glands to produce oil, which is key for healthy, shiny, strong strands. Finally, coconut oil conditions the hair shaft, and increases shine and hair fiber pliability. It's also an excellent sealant that locks in moisture.
