Last weekend, British fashion designer Gareth Pugh opened his debut retail space, on Hong Kong's Ice House Street, alongside avant-garde darlings Commes des Garçons and Martin Margiela. Pugh, whose celebrity following includes Jessica Stam, Beyoncé and Rihanna, welcomed customers into a 658-square-foot space coated in black rubber paint and glossy tiles, with clothes racks set into walls and padded leather changing rooms.
The store is, of course, reflective of Pugh's design aesthetic. He told WWD, "Because it was my first store, I knew I had to do something that was very me. So I went back to my runway shows and thought, what could be more me than a black box? But instead of doing something very one-dimensional, I decided to play around with a lot optical illusions that will change the space according to reflections."
For the time being, Pugh remains committed to his eponymous brand, dismissing rumors that he will take the reins at Thierry Mugler: "“There is no truth to them at all . . . It’s not going to happen.”
