Meet 'Bionic' Model Rebekah Marine and Her 6-Year-Old 'Mini Me'
These two are redefining beauty one catwalk at a time.
New York Fashion Week is filled with beautiful people wearing beautiful ensembles in front of beautiful celebs. And while that may never change, we couldn't be more excited that the standard of beauty is slowly but surely shifting...one catwalk at a time.
Back at the September installment of NYFW, we were inspired by Aussie teen Madeline Stuart, who has Down Syndrome, when she walked in the Hendrik Vermeulen's show.
This time around, we're blown away by the "bionic model" Rebekah Marine, who made her third appearance at Fashion Week this week, with a very special guest. Marine, 28, was born without a right forearm and was joined on the runway by her "mini me," six-year-old Gianna Schiavone, who was born without a left forearm.
They walked in the FTL Moda show and both wore Josefa Da Silva gowns — and even held hands at the end.
The gals met through the Lucky Fin Project, a non-profit that raises awareness and celebrates people born with limb differences.
"Gianna's my mini-me. She looks like me and she was also born the same way I was," Marine told People. "Walking with her meant the world to me. It's almost symbolic of passing the torch to future generations."
"I've been trying to push the boundaries in the fashion industry, hoping that I can open doors for people like Gianna in the future," Marine continued. "It was really cool to incorporate her in the show."
As for Schiavone? The 6-year-old said: "It's fun because we both have the same thing in common. Walking with her makes me feel happy because there's not just one me in the world." (**Heart melts**)
In addition to encouraging the Fashion Week set to celebrate differences, it's also worth noting that NYFW models are also paving the way for the enjoyment of fantastic milkshakes when they're not reporting for duty:
