Clare Bowen Cut Off Her Hair for the Most Beautiful Reason
Get out the kleenex.
Like many girls, I'm pretty attached to my hair. At some point it became inextricably bound to my looks. In elementary school, it was waist-length until a "friend" told me she wanted to trim it for fun and wound up "trimming" off the entire length. Strangely, I wasn't as upset about this as much as I was worried how distraught my parents would be. Which they were.
Fast-forward to college, when I decided to make a donation to Locks of Love. The initial ten inches didn't bother me, but the hairdresser wasn't stopping there, cutting at least another five until it was in a terribly feathered jaw-length 'do. I hated him. And I'm ashamed to admit I cried off and on over the next two weeks with pangs of regret—forgetting the whole reason I did it.
To this day, embarrassingly, I still feel waves of panic when I go to the salon. Which is why I was particularly moved when Nashville star Clare Bowen explained why she chopped off her mermaid curls. I won't dare condense it:
It made me feel silly and out of touch, cringing for a moment about all the time I had spent researching the perfect shampoo last month. In a time where social media feeds glorify the physical, it was a refreshing reminder of what's really important.
How beautiful is that?
