Meet Madeline Stuart, the Aussie Teen With Down Syndrome Who'll Walk at New York Fashion Week
This inspiring teen is changing our view of the modeling industry, one catwalk at a time.
Meet Madeline Stuart: The 18-year-old Aussie with Down syndrome is set to strut her stuff on the catwalk at New York Fashion Week this Fall. Stuart signed to walk with MODA in association with the Christopher Reeve Foundation, which makes her the first woman with Down syndrome to be given a modeling contract.
Stuart's NYFW gig comes on the heels of Jamie Brewer's appearance on the catwalk. The American Horror Story actress, who also has Down syndrome, walked at NYFW in February in collaboration with the "Role Models Not Runway Models" campaign. The duo finally met in L.A. after following each other on Twitter for months. Stuart calls Brewer "her inspiration."
Madeline has already made a name for herself in the industry, crediting supermodel Karlie Kloss as one of her first Twitter followers.
Madeline's mom Rosanne said, "There hadn't been anyone who chased this dream, whereas Madeline really chased it. She wanted this and she worked hard for it. I've done everything I can on the business end to get her to this stage. Now it's just her working her charm."
And charm she does! In addition to walking at NYFW, Madeline has done runway work with EST by Thelna and has been named the face of a new line of handbags with everMaya - all named after her and 5% of the proceeds will go to the National Down's Syndrome Society (NDSS).
Here is a shot of Madeline modeling for EST by Thelna, looking super fabulous:
Madeline recently made an appearance on the Today Show in Australia, where she was interviewed about how she lost 40 pounds in an effort to become healthy. The video also gives a behind-the-scenes look at one of her photo shoots.
We are so excited to see Madeline's catwalk debut at NYFW this Fall, we just know she's going to rock it!
