Exclusive Interview: Kat Graham, Stylebistro Celebrity Guest Editor
Hollywood red carpet fashion can be fun to see, but you have to admit it can get a bit boring at times. Nowadays, celebrities are so scared of the fashion police that they play it incredibly safe.
Luckily, there are people like Kat Graham out there: ready and willing to break stereotypes and make unique fashion statements. Most people know Kat as Bonnie Bennett from the Vampire Diaries. But Kat is also an accomplished dancer and singer who has worked with industry heavyweights including Missy Elliot, Justin Bieber and the Black Eyed Peas.
When we sat down and chatted with Kat, one thing was clear—this girl knows her fashion. She isn't a starlet who sits back and lets someone else dress her. Forget little black dresses, Kat takes her fashion avant garde and spikey. Here are some snippets from our conversation:
SB: We love that you're not afraid of Joan Rivers getting on your case!
No why would I be afraid of that...I'm not afraid of the big bad wolf. I am the big bad wolf. I'm not scared of what people have to say about me...I don't care. If I feel like wearing a freaking pink onesie hammer pant jumpsuit made out of latex—damn right I'm going to wear it...like Grace Jones said. I'm style, I'm not fashion. Fashion changes every season, I don't. So I'm sticking to what I feel good in.
SB: What's been your favorite red carpet outfit so far?
I wore a Lie Sang Bong tiger dress with these crazy zipper shoulders to Perez's birthday last year. And I think that's one of my favorite looks because it was really me and still very fun and avant garde and tigers are my favorite animals. I did my own hair and makeup so I was really just proud of being able to put that all together by myself.
SB: If you could raid anyone's closet—living, dead or fictional—who would it be?
I know most people are going to say Carrie Bradshaw, but I would definitely say Grace Jones in a heartbeat. Eiko, who did most of her fashion for her shows, is so incredible and really built these pieces that were very much about structure and these incredible costumes that were made out of all these different fabrics and textures. I mean Grace there is no comparison, definitely Grace Jones in a heart beat. Definitely one of my idols. Easy.
SB: In an emergency, if you had to pull one thing from your closet and run what would it be?
I have a pretty random closet. I guess my patent leather knee pads with gold studs attached to them. It's studded out knee pads for my dancing. I guess I would definitely grab those. I can always get other things, but those were specifically created for me and I love them and I love dancing in them. I would definitely take them and run.
