Billie Jean King won her first Wimbledon doubles at just the age of 17, and went on to create her own pro women's circuit because she was tired of earning less than her male counterparts in competitions. 

Not only was she named the first female Sports Illustrated sportsman of the year in 1972, but was also the first openly lesbian athlete when she came out as gay in the 1980s.
