(Art by Tanya Leigh Washington)Haven't spring cleaned your closet like you wanted to yet? Us either, and clearly we can use all the help and motivation we can get. While it's fairly obvious that any clothing with stains or rips gets the boot, it's a bit harder to determine when to part with well-fitting items in pristine condition—sure, you should toss anything you haven't worn in a while, but unless you catalogue your outfits on a daily basis a la Cher Horowitz, who can even keep track? Thankfully, NYC-based wardrobe consultant and personal shopper Diane Pollack has a simple method for identifying the sartorial slackers in your wardrobe that won't take more than a few seconds out of your morning.

Every time you wear an item, turn the hanger around backwards in your closet. Depending on how big your wardrobe is, give yourself a time frame—for instance two months or after the season is over. At the end of your deadline, assess the items in the closet that are still facing forward. Do you really need them? Did you wear other favorite clothes first? Perhaps it is time to get rid of them."
