Fashion Secrets from Celebrity Stylists: Ilaria Urbinati

Ilaria Urbinati
If you were one of the millions (including our entire staff) who let out a collective gasp of delight when Lizzy Caplan showed up on this year's Emmys red carpet looking drop dead gorgeous, you have Ilaria Urbinati to thank for that perfect style moment in time. Urbanati is one of the elite—a stylist to the stars who dresses the likes of Caplan, Nina Dobrev and Shailene Woodley, among others. She is known for tailoring her approach to fit the personalities and styles of each of her clients, and we've got the scoop on everything from her go-to outfit to which trends are hottest this season. Read on for a peek into Urbanati's very stylish world.

What is your go-to, no-fail outfit?
"Because I have to worry about everyone else's clothing all the time, I don't want to have to think too much about mine. I like a uniform of sorts—classic and a little French. I'm a tomboy so I like that '90s Winona or Meg Ryan style of dressing. And, I can easily mix it up by throwing on a pop of color with my accessories.

My go-tos are Helmut Lang black slouchy trousers, a black-and-white striped tee and men’s style oxford flats—they can be swapped for heels at night. In the winter, I swap out the tee for a cashmere knit from Helmut, Vince or Equipment in gray, navy or black. Also, I wear tortoise Wayfarer Ray-Bans, jewelry from Made Her Think or Linanoel, and I love a big oversize bag from Givenchy."

What were your favorite fall trends from the Fall 2014 season and why?
"One of the trends I love for fall is long-sleeved gowns and dresses. I think they are having a big moment on the red carpet, and some of my personal favorites from last Fashion Week are these two stunning pieces from Valentino. I love the romantic yet modern style that both of these dresses have.

We saw a lot of these for the fall season by designers such as Giorgio Armani and Givenchy. I love suits and androgynous styles for girls—it’s something different but still elegant and a lot of Hollywood girls have taken this trend to the red carpet.

It was all over the runways—on tops, bottoms, shoes, sweaters—everything. Personally, I’d wear this chunky sweater from Oscar de la Renta and accessorize it with a pair of AIR OPTIX® Colors contact lenses in Brilliant Blue, and mix in some neutrals like gray, white or black in my shoes or bottoms."

What closet staple do you buy in multiples and why?
"I don’t think you can ever have enough shoes, which is why I make sure to have so many. Shoes are such an important part of your wardrobe and can make or break any outfit. Also, they’re an accessory you’ll get so much use out of because you can wear them again and again with different looks. I love anything pointy and in a bright color. I also have a lot of hats—beanies, oversize fedoras, etc—in felt or wool in the winter, or in straw for the summer."
What is the best piece of style advice you've ever received?
"My grandma always told me that you could be in jeans and a T-shirt, but as long as you have gorgeous accessories, you’ll always look chic."

What celebrity look that you styled are you most proud of and why?
"I always feel proud after styling one of my clients, simply because it is such a process and seeing the result on the red carpet is always a humbling moment. But one of my favorite looks so far is probably Nina Dobrev at the Teen Choice Awards this year. She really stood out on the red carpet, her top and bottom by Vionnet, her hair by Riawna [Capri] and her AIR OPTIX® Colors contact lenses in green just gave her a colorful and youthful look. I also loved Lizzy Caplan’s custom Donna Karan Atelier gown at the Emmys this year. I could go on and on, it’s like asking me to pick a favorite child!"
