Unless you're lucky enough to live in a warm locale year-round, chances are your skin is pretty pasty right now after a long, dreary winter. If you're going to give at-home self-tanning a go in preparation for spring's skimpier styles, there are a few things you need to know beforehand—many of which aren't readily apparent. That's why we called upon St. Tropez skin finishing expert Sophie Evans to shed some light on an oft-overlooked move that ensures an even glow every time.

Before you apply self-tanner, make sure only your hands, feet, elbows, knees, wrists and any severely dry spots, like a patch of eczema, are well moisturized—these areas soak color up fast! A self-tan can go about seven shades darker in these areas due to the skin being slightly thicker. Moisturizing prior will dilute the self-tanner, guaranteeing the tan will be natural and even throughout."
