2011: The Toronto SlutWalk Challenges Rape Culture, And Inspires Amber Rose's SlutWalk In Los Angeles, California
In April 2011, thousands of women (and men) protested in Toronto, in the first SlutWalk march of its kind, after a Toronto police officer told a group of female college students that they shouldn't "dress like sluts" if they didn't want to be sexually assaulted. Ugh. Slut shaming, much?
Well, it's a good thing that maddening incident sparked grassroots protests and a worldwide campaign in more than 200 countries. It also inspired Amber Rose's SlutWalk Festival, an all-inclusive, not-for-profit protest event that takes place in Los Angeles, California, every year.
