At the 1975 CMAs, Charlie Rich was supposed to announce that John Denver had won "Entertainer of the Year," but he went in a different direction. Instead, he reached into his pocket, took out a lighter, and burned the envelope right there at the podium. Some thought it was a protest against Denver's pop sound, and some fans believed Rich thought Denver wasn't "country" enough to win. However, years later Rich's son explained that his father was drunk and did it as a joke.
