In 2008, while married to Dean Sheremet, the singer fell in love with Northern Lights co-star Eddie Cibrian, who also was married at the time. They left their spouses for each other, and have been together ever since.

"You had two couples whose marriages didn't work who really stumbled upon each other and fell in love," she told People in 2010.

Sheremet and Rimes were married for seven years before splitting. In 2015, Sheremet opened up about the cheating in an interview with Nat's Next Adventure, stating that their marriage was already rocky before the affair.

"I felt like I was never having my needs met so there was fighting," he said. "And I was so intertwined in managing her career that I didn’t know how to make the distinction between husband and boss, husband and partner, husband and manager... I was husband, father, friend, lover, manager. There were so many hats and I didn’t know what hat to wear when."

"Unfortunately, I think the business ended up destroying us," he said. "That passion for our marriage wasn’t there. The person that I needed to be, the person I should have been, I wasn’t. I wasn’t the person she came home to and unloaded on. And, then, of course, I was thinking, I haven’t done what I’ve wanted to do in over eight years."

While their relationship was tumultuous, he never thought it would end because of an affair. "Never in a million years did I think something like that would have happened."
