Stylish Secrets Straight from the Set of 'Pitch Perfect 2'
Meet Chrissie Fit, the new Bella on the block.
"You have to instantly know who a character is when you see them on screen," costume designer Salvador Perez recently explained to us. "There are 12 girls in Pitch Perfect, and they each have to have a personality but that’s the fun part of it." We got the scoop on a new addition to the Barden Bellas: Chrissie Fit, who will play Florencia "Flo" Fuentes in the upcoming sequel. See what the rising star had to say about her style on and off set, her getting pumped-up playlist and the cast's go-to karaoke songs.
Tell us about being the new addition to the Bellas. "Flo comes from really humble beginnings, so that’s the one thing that’s very different from the other girls and where the comedy lies. It was obviously a dream come true because all of those girls are freaking hilarious, so it was really fun to be one of the new girls [but] it was really scary at first. It’s funny, I’m the smallest girl but I sing the baseline—the lowest notes. I was just very grateful we had such a cool music department: you’ll see Flo have her little moments. I’m lucky enough that my favorite [song from the film] is already in one of the trailers. Everybody already knows we sing ‘Who Run the World’ by Beyonce and that was really special because we had 3,000 extras that day and everyone was so excited to see the Bellas perform. I literally felt like I was Beyonce—I don’t know how Beyonce feels, but I think I experienced a fraction of it."
What is your go-to karaoke song? "It’s really weird and random. There’s this Erykah Badu song called 'Tyrone.' It’s really, really great because there’s so much attitude in [it], and I just put on her voice. Karaoke should be fun; I don’t really like when people go up there and sing super dramatic songs that show all your vocal ability, but I’ll go up there and do Sir Mix-A-Lot’s 'Baby Got Back'—any really fun song."
How would you get yourself pumped up for performance scenes? “I would just blast music [in my] trailer. I would jam [to] that Michael Jackson and Justin Timberlake song, 'Love Never Felt So Good,' and then Brittany Snow made a CD [of] a bunch of things we were playing in Baton Rouge. One time we went karaoke singing and Anna Kendrick sang R. Kelly’s 'Ignition,' and it was the funniest thing ever—that was on there. So I'd just put on that CD and dance freestyle by myself in the trailer. And then I got caught, and it’s on video."
What's Flo's wardrobe like? "My character had a lot of influences from her culture. Although she is a foreign exchange student, she’s still very much a college student and dresses like everyone else. There was a point where it was even a little too sexy—we had to walk a fine line between Latina sex pot and classic, quiet and strange. I always thank Sal so much for putting me in high heels and wedges because I’m not the shortest Bella—I beat Anna Kendrick by an inch. Aside from Lilly [played by Hana Mae Lee], who’s very colorful and does different patterns on top of patterns, I have a pretty colorful and vibrant wardrobe."
How does it compare to your everyday style? “Ohmigosh, I’m always wearing black. It’s so comforting; I have to make myself wear other colors. I like sleek, modern kind of looks. Self Portrait, Chanel—anybody that has those clean lines that are still feminine, I really like that a lot. Flo is just like ‘Party time!’ And my hair is never so big and voluptuous."
Funniest co-star from the film? “That’s really hard. All the girls bring a different kind of humor to the table. That would just be like if you had children and had to pick your favorite—you might secretly have one, but you’ll never tell.”
