4. Rihanna In Jean Paul Gaultier, 2011
Rihanna went sheer for the 2011 Grammys by wearing a Jean Paul Gaultier confection that came from the label's Spring 2011 Couture collection. Her dress was the second to last look to appear on the runway, making it one of the most impressive gowns in the presentation.

Gaultier's theme that year was punk couture, and while Rihanna's album was far from rock in 2011, she was up for a bevy of awards, including Album of the Year and Best Pop Vocal Album. (It was the year of "What's My Name" and "Only Girl (In the World.")

But back to Jean Paul. In the 2011 Spring Couture show, invites were sent with a piece of fishnet safety pinned to cardboard. Outfits were named after "Anarchy in the U.K." and "London Calling." The entire collection had a ripped 'n' torn aesthetic... but high fashion. Dog collars were matched with wide-skirted black trench coats, fishnet blazers had peplum shapes, and corset buckles blended in with creme tuxedo dresses.

Rihanna's look was actually a bridal dress of sorts, and the model's veil took the shape of an elaborate Mohawk before it cascaded down in black tulle from her head.

The frothy white tulle stripes on the gown were also a nod to the designer's origins: "Something else Gaultier has always been — the most Parisian of designers. A cancan froth of silk tulle ruffles peaked out here and there before finally erupting into a full-on, high-kicking finale," Voguewrote. That night, Rihanna looked high fashion indeed.
