14. Janelle Monae In Jean Paul Gaultier Couture, 2019
Janelle Monae brought old school glamour to the 2019 red carpet by wearing Jean Paul Gaultier Couture gown from its Spring 2019 Haute Couture collection. The white ruched dress had the fiercest power shoulders known to man, and the neckline was lined with a velvet maroon trim that matched her maroon pumps. She accented the look with Tiffany & Co. jewelry, including two mismatched earrings. While her hat looked like a jaunty fascinator, it was actually an interesting headdress that was comprised of an angled brim and a net made of gold safety pins.

Monet's styling of the Gaultier look was a complete departure from its runway presentation. On the catwalk the dress was paired with white tights, white pirate boots, and a maroon 17th-century poet's hat. The theme of that year's collection was nautical, but made couture. "What lies beyond the Jean Paul Gaultier sea?" Vogueasked at the time, noting the collection had things like blue and white striped cape blouses, sailor-like jackets, and nautical blazers with “shark shoulders.”

Monae's outfit had that "shark shoulder" effect, but she completely reworked the style to feel more "1940s Parisian" rather than "1700s Deck Hand." It was a highlight of the 2019 red carpet.
