Mary Edmonia Lewis
Mary Edmonia Lewis (1844- 1907) was an American sculptor and the first woman of African-American and Native American descent to be recognized as a sculptor. Her pieces portrayed First Nation and African-American people in Neoclassical styles, and at the end of the 1800s she remained the only woman of color who had participated in and been recognized by the art world.
