Earth Day began in 1970, after founder Gaylord Nelson, then a U.S. Senator from Wisconsin, witnessed the environmental devastation of a 1969 oil spill in Santa Barbara, California. With the help of his co-chairs he organized events across the country to help bring attention to an emerging environmental consciousness and capture some of the energy of the anti-war movement.
