The Origin Of These Popular Holidays Might Surprise You

Valentine's Day
While the exact origin of the holiday is a bit muddy, it may be rooted in the Roman celebration of the feast of Lupercalia, which occurred February 13 to 15. The party was a drunken revelry which included sacrificing animals, whippings with animal hides to improve fertility, and matchmaking (clothing optional). The name may come from a Roman-backed execution of two men named Valentine, whose martyrdom was honored by the Catholic Church with the celebration of St. Valentine's Day.
