Who: Ashley Nicolette Frangipane, known as Halsey, is an American singer and songwriter whose stage name is a reference to Halsey Street in Brooklyn, where she spent a lot of time growing up. It's also an anagram of her first name.

Why she's fearless: New Jersey native Halsey has always been vocal and open about her struggle with mental illness and bipolar disorder. Her debut studio album, Badlands, explores her troubled past with haunting melodies and moving lyrics. I'd like to personally vouch for the fact that her music changes lives.

Our musical picks: "Colors," "Control," and "Bad At Love"
