Trend to Try: Slip Dresses

If a slip dress looks a bit risqué to you, that's because it was originally worn as an undergarment. In the '90s, things changed when the slinky, silky spaghetti-strapped piece gained popularity after being worn by style icons such as Princess Diana and Victoria Beckham in her Posh Spice days. Now, it has become a red carpet favorite for stars unafraid of donning something dangerously revealing (ahem, Rihanna).

There is something quite elegant about slip dresses. The simple silhouette offers a refreshing departure from hordes of elaborate gowns adorned with beading, layers of tulle and sequins. A look at the stars' interpretations of the dress reveal that glamour can also come in the form of minimalism.

Nicole Richie let her Marc Jacobs metallic number stand alone, with barely any jewelry and her hair pulled into a tight updo.

Harley Viera-Newton wore a figure-hugging slip dress with lace trim. She kept the look classic with red accents on her lips and nails.

Tika Sumpter wowed in a floor-length white Johanna Johnson gown. She channeled Old Hollywood with wavy hair and a scarlet pout.

Rihanna is definitely a fan of this look. She has styled it to appear casual, with Chuck Taylors and a bucket hat or denim jacket, as well as dressed-up in ankle-strap heels.
