It's interesting how beauty ideals change. Today women get lip injections to get pouty lips, but in the early 1900s, they strapped one "lipshapers" that reduced "protruding, prominent, thick, unshapely lips to normal."

There were a few reasons why women wanted smaller lips. First, actresses had dainty cupid's bow lips in the movies, and women wanted to emulate that. Second, the push for smaller lips was racially charged, as people of color had naturally fuller lips.
