4. Charcoal Biscuits
Prior to toothpaste, women would nibble on charcoal biscuits to get their morning breath under control. This would stain their teeth black, but it wasn't seen as something embarrassing or shocking. How things have changed!

If you didn't want to spend your household money on charcoal, another common practice was to take the ashes of burnt bread and rub them across your teeth, achieving a similar result. 

Oddly enough, this trend might be coming back into vogue! There has been a recent uptick in charcoal toothpastes, but this time around they don't leave your teeth black after you brush them.
